Portal Training – 19 July
We encourage new members, those new to their roles and those wishing to refresh their knowledge of the Marketing Edinburgh platforms - Meeting Edinburgh, Member Extranet and Edinburgh Rewards, to attend our ‘Portal Training’ event at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday 19 July. This is an opportunity to run through any queries about the platforms, ensure that your team is proficient in answering enquiries, as well as exchange knowledge with industry colleagues.
Meet the Team – 31 August
Akva are hosting our first biannual ‘Meet the Team’ event on Friday 31 August. This is an informal networking opportunity to engage with representatives from all departments of Marketing Edinburgh and fellow members. Join us for tea, coffee and pastries and meet new members as well as catching up with familiar faces.
Annual Conference/Membership Award Ceremony – Date TBC…
Our annual conference is set for October, during which we will recognise long-standing members, highlight our achievements, discuss topical subjects and look forward at the Marketing Edinburgh 3-year strategy.
Ambassador Dinner – Save the Date
Convention Edinburgh’s annual Ambassador Dinner will take place on Thursday 20 September at Surgeons Quarter, with over 70 Ambassadors in attendance. We have two very interesting speakers at the event; Stephen Ingledew, CEO of FinTech Scotland and Benedict Allen, Adventurer, Explorer and Author. E-invites to members have been sent, so if you are interested in networking with our influential Ambassadors, please respond as soon as possible to register your interest.

Marketing Edinburgh Sponsored the Local Hero Awards
Edinburgh’s Local Hero Awards took place on Friday 15 June and recognises the everyday superheroes who make our city a great place to live and work. The Awards shine a light on inspirational people who show exceptional levels of courage, determination and compassion towards others. Marketing Edinburgh was honored to sponsor the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award, which was presented by Joanna Ablett, Business Development Manager, to George Willis. George is a volunteer at a local care home; he entertains residents with music, helps at meal times and has even created a sensory garden to give residents an outdoor space.
On Wednesday 20 June, Marketing Edinburgh held its annual Member Golf Day. We invited 10 members to Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society to play 18 holes of golf with Marketing Edinburgh’s CEO, John Donnelly, and a member of the Bruntsfield team. Well done to the top golfer of the day, Callum Taylor from Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, who was prized with a golf polo shirt. National Association Fam Trip - 12-14 July
A group of national association buyers will visit the city for a future conference FAM Trip from 12-14 July so they can discover first-hand why Edinburgh is the perfect destination. Guests will be treated to an action packed itinerary, enabling them to discover the very best of what Edinburgh has to offer – fingers crossed the sun shines!
Legends – 13-17 August
Week commencing 13 August, Edinburgh’s will take the spotlight as part of VisitScotland’s digital business tourism campaign, Legends. Convention Edinburgh, along with individuals and organisations across the city, will be working together to showcase the city’s vast strengths in the Life Sciences sector. Keep an eye out on Twitter (@conventions) and LinkedIn (Convention Edinburgh) for campaign messaging, we encourage involvement from across the city so please engage by retweeting as well as posting your own content using the hashtags #IdeasBecomeLegend and #MakeitEdinburgh.
Meet GB China Event - 26-29 September
Following the recent launch of Scotland’s first direct flight from Beijing to Edinburgh, we are delighted to confirm that Edinburgh has been selected by VisitBritain to host their new MeetGB China event this autumn. The event will bring in 25-30 top MICE buyers from China for three days of pre-fam trips in other regions of the UK before the entire group comes together in Edinburgh on 26 September. Commencing the following day with a 24-hour fam trip around the capital, the event kicks off in earnest with a welcome reception that evening with the Lord Provost. The workshop will take place on Friday 28th September at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa and conclude with a gala dinner that evening. Convention Edinburgh is supporting VB in organising the event.
Venues, hotels and suppliers from across the UK who currently target the Chinese MICE market will be recruited by VB to attend the workshop, whilst Convention Edinburgh will organise the one-day fam trip. To note interest in either the workshop or supporting the fam trip, please contact Amanda Ferguson. Please note that priority will be given to those already engaging with the ETAG China Ready Group and who are relevant to the Chinese MICE market.
IMEX America - FYI
Elaine Miller, Convention Edinburgh’s International Association Sales Manager, will attend IMEX America in Las Vegas on the Scotland stand this October. With 8000+ corporate and association buyers anticipated to attend, this is the leading international Business Events trade shows in North America. If you have any clients attending the show and feel they would benefit from learning more about Edinburgh as a business events destination, please let Elaine know - she’d be delighted to meet up with them.
What’s Been Happening?
Amanda Ferguson and Elaine Miller attended IMEX Frankfurt in May, exhibiting on the Scotland stand alongside the EICC, Surgeons Quarter and Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa. One of the largest international business events trade shows in the world, this event attracts 8000+ corporate and association buyers from across the world. The team carried out 45+ appointments over the three days, discussing business events with a total potential economic value of £24M, £11M of which was for new conferences.
Numerous additional networking and presentation opportunities were exploited during the show to help raise the profile of Edinburgh to a wider audience, including press appointments; the IMEX Policy Forum; Gaining Edge Knowledge Exchange; and, BestCities educational networking dinner.
IMEX is always a key date in our diary as it attracts such a strong turnout of association buyers. This year was no exception. This was our first IMEX in our new roles so we were especially keen to connect with current clients and explore new contacts. We even confirmed a conference at the show for 2019 which will be announced this autumn.

Edinburgh Grand Event
On Thursday 7 June, Convention Edinburgh hosted the very first event at one of the city’s newest developments, The Edinburgh Grand on St Andrew Square. The Ambassador Event was a social occasion, which allowed guests to experience drinks and canapés whilst enjoying the 360 ° panoramic views from the penthouse, before receiving a private tour of the property.

We are delighted the first event at The Edinburgh Grand was such a huge success. It was an absolute honour to host your event. We’ve had lots of great direct feedback and several booking enquiries already.
Claire MacGilp, Research and Ambassador Executive at Marketing Edinburgh, said:
We were delighted to be approached by The Edinburgh Grand to host an Ambassador event, especially if as this was the first event to be held at the newly-opened hotel.
In total, 45 Ambassadors and their guests were present. There were representatives from all 4 of the city’s universities, as well as Scottish Arbitration Centre; Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh; and, Edinburgh Dental Institute, to name a few. All the guests were wowed by the building, its décor and facilities, together with hospitality of the hotel team. We were also blessed with glorious sunshine, which was the perfect accompaniment.
As a result of the evening, two new Ambassadors were recruited to Convention Edinburgh's Ambassador Programme.
Association London Sales Trip
Hannah Shaw, the Team’s National Association Sales Executive, was in London for a sales trip from 25-27 June. She was accompanied by Julie Kershaw, Membership & Accommodation Executive at Marketing Edinburgh and a representative from Surgeons Quarter. The Team carried out 10 appointments whilst in London, discussing possible business events worth nearly £2 million of economic impact.
