Claire researches conferences which have the possibility of coming to Edinburgh for future events, as well as looking after our extensive Ambassador Programme of 600+ members. Claire joined Marketing Edinburgh after 11 years working with the National Trust for Scotland where she shared her passion for history, culture and holidaying in the great Scottish outdoors in the Holidays Department. Since starting her new role, Claire has met many Edinburgh Ambassadors at events and is leading the way for upcoming networking events.
Describe your average day in the office
My role focuses on both research and the Ambassador Programme, so an average day can be quite varied. From a research point of view, I am responsible for identifying and exploring potential conferences that fit within Edinburgh’s areas of expertise, and then subsequently identifying and contacting local academics or business leaders to generate an interest in working with us to attract the conference to the city.
The Ambassador Programme recognises local experts who have an influence over their associations’ choice of conference destination. I am responsible for maintaining the contact list for existing Ambassadors, as well as recruiting new Ambassadors from both local academia and business. As part of the programme we also run regular events throughout the year, which are a great opportunity to network with like-minded people, build new contacts, whilst experiencing many of the fantastic locations that Edinburgh has to offer. I plan and execute these events with the assistance of our Events Manager.
I also provide the Sales Team with assistance such as contributing research data for bidding documents; identifying and working on key research projects for the year and feeding these back to the Sales Team; and providing on-site assistance with various industry events and familiarisation trips.
What role do Ambassadors play in attracting conferences to Edinburgh?
Ambassadors play a vital part in attracting conferences to the city – we simply would not be able to bid or host events without their expertise.
While we can provide tailored support throughout the full stage of attracting, bidding and hosting an event, we would not be able to host an event without their specialist knowledge and influence. Their support and enthusiasm in showcasing the advancements Edinburgh has made within their particular field is crucial.
What can Ambassadors look forward to in the near future?
As mentioned, we run regular events throughout the year. The next event, which we are especially looking forward to, is being held in conjunction with the Edinburgh Grand, which opens at the beginning of June. Ambassadors, and their guest, will be given the chance to be one of the first to experience this latest luxury hotel by receiving a private tour of the property, followed by drinks and canapés on the rooftop penthouse, which offers a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the city.
I am focusing on how we can attract more of conferences to the city which fall within Edinburgh’s centres of excellence, such as Technology, Life Sciences and Renewable Energy. Do you know of any? If so, please get in touch!
What are you working on at the moment?
Research is always on-going, there is always something new and exciting to explore! With new developments and advances taking place in so many sectors within Edinburgh, there is always something to investigate, which is why my job is so interesting.
What is Elaine doing now?
Having worked for Convention Edinburgh for 17 years, Elaine is a well-known face in the industry. She has been heavily involved in the Edinburgh Ambassador Programme for many years and has seen the programme develop into the 600+ strong group of Edinburgh Ambassadors we know today.
Claire replaced Elaine as the day-to-day Ambassador contact when Elaine took on the role of International Sales Manager in October 2017. As well as bringing international conferences to Edinburgh, Elaine is still very much involved in the Ambassador Programme, overseeing the research and Ambassador elements of Marketing Edinburgh.
