As the City Convention Bureau, Convention Edinburgh collates information for the annual worldwide ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) Rankings. The rankings determine the world’s leading business event destinations based on the number of international meetings held in the city that year.
Announced in May 2019, Edinburgh climbed from 32nd in 2017 to 27th, reporting a total of 85 international meetings with 50+ delegates which maintained our second place in the UK only to London.
This translates as 20,593 delegates, 23 venues and 10 sectors, including health, surgery & medicine, physics, tech, social science, tech, literary, business & finance, engineering and languages.
Only those meetings that meet ICCA’s stringent assessment criteria - rotating between at least three countries, have a proven attendance of at least 50 participants, and are held on a regular basis - are recorded within the global association’s annual statistics.
This impressive result is down to the hard work and effort of the whole city. Special thanks goes to the academics and venues which submitted event numbers to ensure Edinburgh remains the leading Scottish destination for business events.
Work has already commenced on collating data for 2019. If you or a colleague has hosted (or indeed attended) an international meeting/conference/symposium this year in Edinburgh, please get in tough with Alex Moore, who can ascertain if it’s an ICAA-qualifying event and can be included in Edinburgh’s submission.
