Not only is Edinburgh home to the world’s longest continually-running film festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, it is also a prime filming destination which has graced the big screen on many occasions over recent years.
Thanks to blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War, One Day and T2 Trainspotting, as well as popular Dramas like Outlander, Edinburgh’s stunning architecture, historical charm and rugged landscape has been showcased to a global audience.

Many of Edinburgh’s prime venues and outdoor spaces have been featured in leading productions, with tourists from all over the globe flocking to visit places they have seen on the screen. This is great news for the events industry as many of the locations shown on screen can offer film-inspired events.
Make it Edinburgh and host an aspect of your event in one of the many venues which have made an on-screen appearance. For example, choose to hold your Gala Dinner at Hopetoun House or the Signet Library, both having featured in Outlander; a period drama set in Scotland during the 18th century.

Even one of the city’s train stations has made it onto the screen, so if you travel to Edinburgh by train, step out onto the set of Avengers: Infinity 2, also known as Edinburgh Waverley train station, before you embark on a cinematic trail through the streets of Auld Reekie.
K&N Travel Associates, a leading Edinburgh-based Destination Management Company, has seen a huge influx in film-inspired events thanks to Scotland’s appearances on the screen. Kate Galloway, Managing Director of K&N Travel Associates, said:
“We’ve seen a surge in recent years of enquiries where the client either wishes the whole event to be very much customised from top to bottom around a specific film they have seen on screen, particularly Outlander and Harry Potter, to incorporating Trainspotting into a treasure hunt in Edinburgh where they had to identify scenes from the film around the city.

“The best Outlander event we did so far was a very detailed 8 day itinerary around Scotland where they wished to get immersed in some of the most iconic locations from the series and really go behind the scenes. We are seeing this Outlander effect also reflected in Association clients we work with, with an International congress this year wishing one of their tours for their delegates to be a bespoke Outlander Post Conference Tour.
“We do send regular newsletters to our client base highlighting possible film themed ideas for their programmes and I’m sure that many have then been further inspired due to the wonderful images of Scotland being portrayed on the big screen.”
Rosie Ellison, Head of Film Edinburgh, said:
"A good film or TV show can burn a place in your heart so that you are driven to visit it. It creates recognition, familiarity and a sense of confidence about a destination. In fact, 78% of visitors want to visit places they have seen on the screen. Outlander, Avengers and T2 Trainspotting have been tremendous adverts for Edinburgh and we look forward to seeing the impact of Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots on visitors."
